Budgeting During
Medical School
A budget is not about restricting every purchase. It is a way to understand what your training and your life actually cost, plan for expenses before they arrive, and make deliberate decisions about how much you need to borrow.
Your Real Year
Your Real Year
Look at the full year, not an average month. Tuition, rent, transport and food are predictable. Licensing fees, equipment, electives and moving between rotations are not — and those are what break a monthly budget.
Fixed Costs
Tuition, rent, utilities and transport. Predictable, and the easiest to plan around once you have the annual number in front of you.
The Once-a-Year Costs
Licensing fees, equipment, exam registrations, electives and moving between rotations. Budget for them monthly or they arrive as emergencies.
Room for a Real Life
Travel home, meals out, an unexpected repair. A plan with no slack in it gets abandoned by November, and an abandoned budget is worth less than a loose one.
What You Are Borrowing
Every recurring expense financed by your line of credit is debt you carry into residency. That is the number worth watching most closely.
